Our Story

Marimo Dance mother daughter smiling fun

It all started with a walk…the long version of our story…

The scene - a city late afternoon, walking with a co-worker at the end of our day.

The magical question: What is something you are passionate about? What do you really want to do with your life?

My answer after what seemed like an eye opening revelation: Own my own dance studio.

It all really started when I found out I could move my body in a graceful, and maybe not so graceful, way in my parents backyard. There you could find me tumbling, twirling, and frolicking about for hours making up my own dances. It wasn’t until I was 9 years old that I started dancing for fun in an actual studio.

Flash forward many years of dancing and always on the go to… a desk. I rarely moved. Adulthood kicked in and there was no time to focus on my dream of owning a studio. Bills needed to be paid, kids needed to be cared for. There simply wasn’t enough time nor energy to.

As my daughter grew, I realized she was like me…always dancing and performing. Here we go, I thought…I’m going to have to leave work to bring her to classes and recitals and spend money instead of saving it. But I wanted her to experience the joy I had and it would be something for us to talk about. It was a challenge. The good thing is, my spark and motivation to start my own studio was ignited again. This time it took on more of a shape. I didn’t want to do recitals or competitive groups. I wanted the focus to be on her and me. I wanted to provide a flexible, low pressure schedule so those working parents could give their kids what they wanted without making sacrifices they couldn’t really swing.

Then I wanted to give the adults an option of joining their kids in a healthy lifestyle. Lead by example, show them the importance of being healthy, forming a bond through dance, feel empowered, and encouraged together.
